The movie Praying the Hours embodies these individual personalities of the hours using the lives of eight ordinary people. Framed by the violent death of a loved one, together they chart the movement of one unremarkable day when they go from ordinary time into the heightened time of kairos, where deep calls to deep. This is the unknown, plumbed by songwriters like Tom Waits, Fiona Apple, and Johnny Cash, written with their own blood. This is illumination found only in the darkness, Sting’s “candle that is brighter than the sun.” It is the momentary burst of inspiration that reveals a deeper truth we suspect is hidden beneath life, ancient yet present, as familiar to Bono as it was to St. Benedict. It’s what we are yearning for. |
